Do I need a Mac to make iPhone apps? Apple Watch apps? Mac apps? The short answer is no. But there's a lot more to it than just that.
How to Make and Receive Phone Calls on Your iPad or Mac. For those times when your iPhone isn’t handy, your iPad and Mac can handle phone calls, thanks to a feature known as iPhone Cellular Calls. First off, launch a Finder window on your Mac. Click on Applications from the left side navigation. Now select the app you want to create a shortcut for. Drag the app and drop it on the desktop.
When making apps for an Apple device (phone, watch, computer) you need to use Xcode. A free piece of software created by Apple that allows you to design and code up apps. Xcode only works on Apple's operating system OS X. So if you have a Mac, then you can run Xcode no problem. If you don't have a Mac, there are two work arounds that I know of that you can use. So in total there are three ways you can run Xcode. Here's my thoughts on each of them.
The Apple TV app movie playback test measures battery life by playing back HD 1080p content with display brightness set to 12 clicks from bottom or 75%. The standby test measures battery life by allowing a system, connected to a wireless network and signed in to an iCloud account, to enter standby mode with Safari and Mail applications launched and all system settings left at default. Battery life varies by use and configuration. Notebook for mac app. See for more information.
1. Using a Mac
This is by far the best option. App that allows you to watch movies on mac. Using apple's hardware to run Xcode is going to be your best experience for making apps. You might not have a Mac though and buying one can be expensive. I remember when I wanted to first buy a Mac and couldn't get over the price tag. The MacBook I was looking to buy cost $1,200. A PC with similar parts (RAM, CPU, HardDrive, etc..) cost only $400. Three times the money for a stinking Apple logo! In retrospect, the money was well worth it.
If you are interested in going this route and buying a computer, check out my Mac Buying Guide for developers.
Also be on the lookout of place where you could use a Mac for free. Maybe your library has a machine you can use.
2. Using a Cloud Service
This is my second favorite option. It's a really creative solution for helping people make apps who don't have Macs. There are few companies that own a bunch of Mac computers and allow you to access them via the web and control them remotely. It's kind of like renting a Mac month to month. All you need is a web browser to access your machine. The downside to this is you have to pay a monthly fee and you must be connected to the internet to do your work. Here are links to two companies that do this: macincloud.com and xcodeclub.com
3. Virtual Machine
This option involves creating a virtual machine on your computer, installing Apple's OS X operating system, and then running Xcode on that virtual machine. I don't like this option for two reasons.
- It's complicated. It takes a lot of work and technical know how to get your virtual machine set up.
- It's illegal. Apple doesn't sell OS X by itself as a stand alone product. They sell computers with OS X on them. For this reason, you can't buy a copy of OS X and run it on your computer. You would have to download it illegally. Some people argue that Apple would never come after you for doing this but I don't think it's worth the risk and besides, you're going to have a MUCH better experience with an actual Mac. Here's a good summary of the legality.
If you got the budget for it, buy a Mac. I know it's crazy expensive but I believe you'll fall in love with your Mac. If you end up using a cloud service, let me know in the comments what your experience has been. I'd love to hear more.
iOS 14 update arrives with many customization options on the iPhone. Since its launch last week, we have seen users showing off the home screen makeover with custom app icons and widgets on the home screen. You can finally add resizable app widgets on the home screen. The personalization options don’t end here. iOS 14 debuts a new category of apps that help you create custom widgets based on your preference and style.
To be clear, you can always use widgets from the installed apps on the iPhone. But they might feel limited in terms of customization to show information. Here is where the widget apps come to light with tons of options to create a widget that packs all the relevant information and match the home screen wallpaper and app icons.
Since the iOS 14 update last week, I have tried a few widget apps to create custom widgets on my iPhone XR. Each app has its pros and cons. Among them, we have finalized the five best iPhone apps to create personalized widgets. Let’s get started.

Widgetsmith comfortably tops the list with a plethora of customization options such as font type, size, background color, and more. It starts with a wide collection of highly customizable widgets. From dates to weather, from reminders to astronomy. It lets you play with a lot of options. Each can be adjusted precisely to fit your desired function and appearance best.
You can add information to a widget using eight categories from the list below.
- Weather
- Calendar
- World Time
- Reminders
- Health
- Astronomy
- Tides
- Photos
You can schedule this set of widgets to appear dynamically on your home screen and follow the rules you define. For example, a particular widget could show the weather first thing in the morning, then your calendar during your workday, then switch to your Activity ring progress as you wrap up your day. Simply select ‘Add a Timed Widget’ and define a time slot for a widget to appear at a set time.
That lets you take full advantage of each slot on your home screen. My favorite feature is Apple Health integration. You can add the Apple Health activity and customize it with other information using the Widgetsmith widgets.
Widgetsmith includes an optional premium monthly or annual subscription. The price starts at $2 per month.

As the name suggests, Color Widget is all about beautiful colors and gradient effects on the widget. As for customization, you can change the background color, theme, font, and even set a photo to a widget. I like a small detail where the app adds a remaining battery percentage at the widget's upper left corner.
What Color Widgets lacks is third-party integration such as Apple Health, Reminders, and Photos app. You can’t add information from these apps to a widget.
Most widgets are completely free to use. You will be mostly fine using them on the iPhone home screen. Some of the widgets do come with a Premium tag that costs $4 as a one-time payment.
If you are comfortable with basic information such as time, date, day, photo, and battery percentage, then Color Widgets is worth trying.

Widgetridoo is all about the flexibility to customize widgets on the go. The app follows a modular concept and divides the whole widget into several blocks. You can drag and drop and move blocks around for a unique look.
Widgetridoo already comes with several built-in widgets divided into categories like Birthdays, Calendar, Feeds, and more. If you look closely, you can view the blocks preview from the category icon itself.
From the widget screen, long tap on a block and select Replace. You can change the block with other information such as image, music, text, birthdays, health data, and more.
The basic functionality is free, but you want more customization options, then you will have to buy the Pro version at $4.

As the name suggests, Usage is a tool to monitor your device's activity, data usage, connection speed, and more. With the Usage app, one can track data usage tracking, memory allocation, storage usage, real-time network connection monitoring, battery status, and detailed specification about device hardware right on the home screen.

Create art from photo app mac. There is a cool editing app for every type of person out there.
There aren't many options to configure the widget. But you do get a long list of widget styles and sizes for customization.
Among them, my favorite and most-used widget is Data Period Limit. You can see how much data you have used and how much data is remaining from the home screen.
Usage is free to use, but I recommend purchasing the pro version for $2 (One-time payment) to enjoy more customization options and features.
Download Usage5. Widget Wizard
Widget Wizard offers Combo widgets that let you choose what data you want to see together in one widget.
Widget Wizard doesn’t support near as many data types as the Widgetsmith, but like Widgeridoo it supports multiple content blocks in a single widget. The app mainly offers three types of widgets – The One, The Double, and The Triple.
All three widget style offers three sizes and based on your preference, you can add details such as health stats, calendar entries, and reminders to a widget.
Widget Wizard costs $2 from the App Store.
